Importance of well-considered strategy is emphasised in the white paper.  The paper confirms growing number of counterfeiting attacks against documents. Counterfeiters are more sophisticated and technologically advanced. Traditionally, document producers kept their advantage by adding more and more security elements. However, it seems that this solution does not work anymore. Too many security elements result just in confusion of inspecting guards. Optaglio, therefore, emphasizes that each component should play a specific role in an integrated defence strategy.

OPTAGLIO, a  research centre situated in Lochovice in the Czech Republic has announced it has exceeded 5 million dpi (dots per inch) resolution on holograms, according to an article in Packaging Europe. The advance enhances visual based protections against counterfeiters, as this level of resolution is beyond the reach of potential attackers, according to the developers. "This success is backed by long research. It is relatively easy to create a narrow stream of electrons, but it is necessary to deal also with particular technical and physical challenges such as proximity effect,“ said Dr Tomas Karenský, senior research manager in OPTAGLIO. "This technology upgrade enables us to create entirely new visual effects.”

Packaging with strong anti-counterfeit protection can enhance product revenues by tens of percent. However, it is critical to define the right strategy, selection of elements and not underestimate supporting activities such as customer communication - write Libor Šustr and Petr Hampl for Packaging Europe. MarkMonitor research has recently shown that managers of more than 86% brands believe their business is significantly damaged by counterfeiting. Most of them say they lose between 10 – 50 % of revenues. In addition to revenue decreases, brands are impacted by low quality or even dangerous products circulating in the market. It is a result of the huge growth of counterfeiting industry, which now is so strong that nobody knows how to cope with it. Historically, counterfeiting was primarily focused on money and documents. Products were imitated only rarely; most counterfeiters focused on antiquities. The enormous space for counterfeiting was opened firstly by mass production and then by changes in the second half of 20th century.

1) Most goods are produced in a different region than they are consumed. Up to the 1970s, most Italians drove Italian cars; Germans drove German cars, British drove British cars, etc. It was the case for most of the products. Local markets give only limited space for entering of counterfeiting goods into the distribution chains. Markets with some specialised items, such as exotic food, were truly global. However, it is tough to fake Vietnamese pepper, Havana cigars or a particular brand of Irish whiskey. More sophisticated clients understand the difference and not sophisticated clients don't care. But lately, as one kind of handbag or break pads is used worldwide, huge opportunities open up for counterfeiting.

In the ever growing battle of PVC vs. polycarbonate for secure ID production, Optaglio announced that it has shipped document security features for some 20 million polycarbonate ID cards, passports and driving licenses in the first half of 2017. This is an increase of 30 percent compared with the same period in 2016. The volume of deployment of document security features for advanced card materials is another signal that the use of polycarbonate for secure IDs is growing. Most of this Optaglio production goes to companies that print secure documents in Asia and Europe. This year Optaglio also [will start to] offer application machines so that the clients can perform [the] entire production process in-house,” says the company, based in the Czech Republic.

The growth in distribution of Optaglio’s advanced card materials comes as more governments are issuing polycarbonate cards, or paper documents that include a polycarbonate page. The company provides document security features that make it much more difficult for criminals to counterfeit identity cards. The trend to polycarbonate documents will continue, with “most market analysts” saying that by 2022, “only a few nations will insist on entirely paper-based documents.” A polycarbonate layer is a main feature in Optaglio’s OVMesh product line. That line integrates “security holograms into polycarbonate cards to create a single polycarbonate unit without any heterogeneous adhesive.” During card lamination, melted polycarbonate flows between holograms that consist of thousands of tiny pieces, the company says—essentially, the card becomes like a sandwhich. That means that any criminal trying to alter the card by removing its document security features would destory the hologram. And once laminated, OVMesh cards can undergo laser engraving either on the OVMesh itself or the layer below.

Optaglio, which makes high-resolution security holograms, has unveiled several new optical features that enable users to identify genuine holograms immediately and that cannot be imitated at all, according to the company. Some of them were implemented in holograms shown at the SDW 2017 Expo (June 26-28; London, England). The ongoing race between document falsifiers and document protectors is mostly based on emulating visual effects of security elements such as holograms. If the falsifier manages to produce something so close to the genuine hologram that ordinary users are confused, his/her counterfeiting effort will likely be successful. It is the main reason hologram producers need to introduce new effects regularly to maintain their advantage against attackers.

LOCHOVICE (June 5, 2017) – Optaglio announced the final phase of development of technology for automated decision making about the genuineness of documents. Machine reading of holograms is critical for increasing of an effectiveness of border checks, security inspections, checking tax stamps, highway stickers, etc. A document examined will be put into a movable machine and shined on with the proper color light from the proper direction. Sensors will check a presence of an expected visual effect. Optaglio launches holographic portrait solution

E-beam lithography firm Optaglio has developed a technology for issuing personalised ID cards with a holographic portrait of a holder. The firm's solution involves the creation of a basic hologram, which cannot be imitated,  with a blank section. This blank section can be filled with a 3D portrait using a special writer delivered by the company. The company says the new technology overcomes a long-term issue connected to the holographic protection of ID cards and passports. The documents need to be personalized with information about the particular holder, including his/her photo. However, holograms are products of mass production because the same master hologram is imprinted into thousands or millions of items.

"New research center is to bring a unique combination of different physical approaches. We will also try to apply holograms on new substrates and open a lot of interesting new questions. Rather than just development of new products, our goal is to reach a thorough understanding of a phenomenon. This will enable us to build entirely new solutions," said Dr. Tomáš Karenský, senior research manager in OPTAGLIO.

 An important part of research activities will focus on microholograms, tiny particles with a holographic surface, invented by OPTAGLIO. Microholograms are sometimes called "holographic dust" and enable several levels of inspection, including forensic.

Když v roce 1994 skupina zapálených vědců zakládala výzkumnou společnost, která ve svých začátcích sídlila v poněkud nevábném "tesco" domku, zřejmě by je ani nenapadlo, že v roce 2017 bude firma Optaglio patřit mezi největší a nejvýznamnější světové hráče v oblasti zabezpečování dokladů a cenin. Předloni firma dokončila rozsáhlé a moderní technologické centrum v Lochovicích na Berounsku. Tamější instalovaný strojový park a laboratorní zařízení jsou nejmodernější v Evropě. Přestože tato česká firma dodává zabezpečovací prvky do mnoha zemí světa, na nových českých dokladech její výrobky lidé nenajdou. "Vyloučili nás tady téměř ze všech výběrových řízení," říká Vladimír Žukov, který je od roku 2012 šéfem firmy Optaglio.

Čím jsou české hologramy tak výjimečné

Blízký východ má zájem o české hologramy. České hologramy dobývají indický poloostrov. Pasy afrických zemí s českými hologramy. Další evropská nasazení českých mikrohologramů... pokaždé, když narážíme na takový a podobný článek, logicky se nabízí otázka, čím jsou vlastně české hologramy (přesněji, produkty lochovické firmy OPTAGLIO) tak zvláštní. O co tedy jde? 

Většina bezpečnostních hologramů, na které můžeme běžně, je vyrobena metodou dot matrix. Takové hologramy jsou vyrobeny ze „standardizovaných“ modulů, přičemž roli hrají jen dva parametry – perioda mřížky a její orientace. Zkušený padělatel vybavený mikroskopem tedy dokáže hologram poměrně rychle odvodit parametry a vytvořit raznici pro výrobu hologramů buď stejných nebo velmi podobných.

Osobní dokumenty i bankovky mají svá sériová čísla, ale padělatelé jsou schopni je přepsat. Možnost identifikovat konkrétní exemplář dokument podle prvku, který nemůže být změněn, tak přináší skokové zlepšení v jejich ochraně i při vyšetřování pokusů o podvody. OPTAGLIO s touto inovací přichází v době, kdy prudce vzrůstá zájem o ochranu dokumentů proti padělatelům. Na slabá místa totiž cílí teroristické a zločinecké skupiny a nedůvěra vůči určitým dokumentům může ovlivnit i postup vůči jejich bezúhonným držitelům. „Jsme rádi, že reakce trhu potvrzuje zájem o nejvyspělejší technologie ochrany proti padělání. Optaglio believes that these new developments will ensure documents producers after 2020 will be able to implement security elements that offer anticounterfeit protection for at least the next 15 years.

Už žádné další padělané doklady. Výzkumná firma OPTAGLIO nový vynález, který díky hologramům může podobné praktiky omezit nebo dokonce zcela vymýtit. Společnost sídlící v Lochovicích na Berounsku hologramy a stroje na jejich produkci vyrábí a stále zdokonaluje. Hologramy jsou dobře známé barevné obrazce, které jsou nejčastěji vidět např. na dokladech. Jde o vyspělou formu záznamu obrazu, která umožňuje zachytit jeho trojrozměrnou strukturu.

„Dnes je obvyklé, že se do dokladu vyryje běžná dvourozměrná fotografie a hologram se přes ni přetáhne jen jako ochrana proti její výměně,“ říká Petr Hampl z firmy OPTAGLIO. Právě fotografie je podle něj jedním z nejvíce rizikových míst dokladů. „Plešatého muže a dlouhovlastou ženu na fotografii nezaměníte, ale v rámci hodně podobných typů může snadno dojít k záměně. A to nemluvím o člověku jiné rasy. Kolik českých policistů dokáže podle fotografie rozlišit mezi Japonkami podobného věku se stejným účesem?“
